Welcome to Jacican

I love to cook, I've always loved to cook.

As a young girl, my time was spent reading the cookbooks that mum kept in the bottom kitchen drawer. Always looking for a new recipe to try, a new food idea. Many weekends were spent making rainbow cakes with as many colours as possible – have you seen my Instagram, not much has changed, and looking for recipes that I could cook using what was available in the cupboard or from the vegetable garden.

At the aged of about 16, I remember stating that I wanted to leave the farm and travel the world. This would be followed by retiring by about 30 and moving back to South Gippsland to grow vegetables and cook. From 16 fast forward 20 years and I returned, starting Jacican Food Studio in Mirboo North, Gippsland where I grow vegetables and cook. This blog is where I share my food adventure.

Year Seven Mirboo North Secondary College Student Hayden Anders got the chance recently to demonstrate both his cooking and communication skills, being interviewed by Johnathon Kendall on ABC Gippsland Radio's Breakfast Show over the recent school holidays.

Hayden visited ABC with Mirboo North's Jaci Hicken, who has a fortnightly food segment on the ABC, brought Hayden along to serve his food and explain to Johnathon and radio listeners why he loves to cook.

Hayden made brunch for the whole ABC office, gave listeners recipes, and served up fluffy pancakes, egg and bacon pies and fruit echidna to Johnathon Kendall while he was on air,” said Jaci Hicken.

Hayden, who was very well spoken and sounded like he was enjoying himself, told Johnathon that he had been interested in creating food since he was about six years old, and has been cooking himself since he was ten years old. He explained that he made lamingtons and sandwiches for the C-Grade cricket team only recently.

Hayden relayed all the recipes for to Jonathon while on air, so listeners could also make the treats, he also explained his love for cooking and all the different types of cooking projects he has done with Jaci over the years.

Jaci and Hayden have made rainbow cakes together and Jaci has also helped Hayden make a Black Forest Cake that he served to the Rotary Club in Mirboo North.

Hayden has enjoyed many cooking classes with Jaci at Jacican Food Studio as well as having birthday parties there.

Hayden said that breakfast is definitely one thing every kid should know how to make to Johnathon and pasta was a favourite of his also.

While its not what the average kid would go and do on their school holidays, well done to Hayden for getting behind the microphone and serving up a lovely brunch to the ABC Radio office,” congratulates Jaci.
